By accessing or using SpendStory ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Service. We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time, and your continued use constitutes acceptance of any changes.

2. Description of Service

SpendStory is an AI-powered spending analysis service that connects to your bank accounts via Plaid, analyzes your transaction history, and generates personalized, humorous narratives about your spending habits. The Service is designed for entertainment purposes and does not provide financial advice.

3. Account Registration

To use SpendStory, you must create an account by providing a valid email address. We use passwordless authentication via one-time PIN codes sent to your email. You are responsible for:

• Maintaining the security of your email account
• All activities that occur under your SpendStory account
• Notifying us immediately of any unauthorized access or security breaches

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service.

4. Payment Terms

SpendStory operates on a credit-based payment model:

• Each spending story costs one credit
• Credits are purchased at $4.99 per credit
• Payments are processed securely through Stripe
• Credits are non-refundable once purchased, except as required by law
• Credits do not expire and remain in your account until used

All prices are in USD. We reserve the right to change pricing at any time, but price changes will not affect credits already purchased.

5. Plaid Integration and Bank Access

By connecting your bank account through Plaid, you:

• Authorize SpendStory to access your transaction data via Plaid's secure API
• Understand that access is read-only — we cannot move money or make transactions on your behalf
• Acknowledge that Plaid's terms of service also apply to your use of their service
• May disconnect your bank accounts at any time through your portal

We store Plaid access tokens in encrypted form to retrieve your transaction data when generating stories.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any laws
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other users' accounts
• Use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to access the Service
• Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers connected to it
• Resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit the Service without authorization
• Use the Service to generate stories for accounts you do not own or have authorization to access

7. Intellectual Property

Our Content: The SpendStory service, including its design, features, code, and branding, is owned by us and protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or distribute any part of the Service without our written permission.

Your Content: You retain ownership of your financial data and any personal information you provide. By using the Service, you grant us a limited license to use your transaction data solely for the purpose of generating your spending stories.

8. AI-Generated Content

SpendStory uses artificial intelligence (Anthropic's Claude) to analyze your spending patterns and generate narratives. You acknowledge that:

• AI-generated content is for entertainment purposes only
• The narratives may contain humorous exaggerations or creative interpretations
• The accuracy of spending analysis depends on the quality and completeness of transaction data
• AI outputs should not be relied upon for financial decisions

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
• Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding any claim
• We are not responsible for any financial decisions you make based on information in your spending stories
• We are not liable for any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in the AI-generated content

10. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to:

• Warranties of merchantability or fitness for a purpose
• Warranties that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free
• Warranties regarding the accuracy or reliability of content
• Warranties regarding the security of data transmission

11. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account at any time if you violate these Terms or for any other reason at our discretion. You may delete your account at any time by contacting us.

Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately, and we may delete your data as described in our Privacy Policy. Unused credits are non-refundable upon termination.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall be resolved in the courts of competent jurisdiction.

13. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will notify users of material changes by posting the updated Terms on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
